England’s Alexander-Arnold ruled out of Euro 2020 squad due to injury

Just days after being named in the final 26-men squad, Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out of England’s UEFA Euro 2020 squad after picking up an injury during a pre-tournament victory against Austria 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium. The 22-year-old Liverpool right-back suffered a grade two quad tear and faces a recovery period of between four to six weeks.

“A scan on Thursday confirmed the 22 year old will be unable to play in the forthcoming tournament so he’s withdrawn from the England squad to return to his club for rehabilitation,” the Football Association (FA) said. England boss Gareth Southgate expressed his worries after the injury. “We’ve got to see, it’s obviously not a good sign that he’s had to walk off the pitch, and he was in some discomfort,” he said.

Southgate will not name his choice until after this Sunday’s game against Romania. Jesse Lingard, James Ward-Prowse, Ollie Watkins, Aaron Ramsdale, Ben Godfrey and Ben White were all cut from England’s Euro 2020 squad earlier this week. However, with Alexander-Arnold’s withdrawal, the players have a chance to make it to the final squad for the Euro league final.

Meanwhile, Southgate also addressed the audible boos as the players knelt before kick-off at Middlesbrough’s ground. “What has happened [against Austria] probably means I need to have another conversation with the players first and foremost because I need see how they feel about it and that’s an important discussion for us to have,” Southgate said.

Southgate also gave an update over Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who was benched during the match despite being confirmed to start. “I don’t think it would be fair to rule him out of it but I think it’s clear to everyone how much football he has missed,” he said. “The timelines are getting more difficult with each training session he might miss and to not have those match minutes against Austria is a blow.”

The Liverpool captain was supposed to play some part against Austria after his three-and-a-half-month groin injury but he remained benched.  Henderson’s potential absence could potentially bring Jude Bellingham and Kalvin Phillips as his replacement. . The Three Lions start their campaign against Croatia on June 13, before taking on Scotland and the Czech Republic in their remaining Group D fixtures.
