England manager Gareth Southgate is set to sign a two-year contract extension until Euro 2024 in Germany. Southgate’s current deal is set to expire after next year’s World Cup in Qatar, where England is on the brink of qualification after the 5-0 win against Albania. The details of the contract remains undisclosed but reports claim that Southgate already assured that he will keep his post.
The 51-year-old coach signed a four-year contract when he was appointed in November 2016 and extended it in 2018 where he signed another four-year deal. Southgate, who currently earns £3million a year, is reportedly set to receive double of his current salary with this new contract extension and if he wins next year’s World Cup he could match former England coach Fabio Capello’s salary of £6m a year.
When asked about the contract extension, Southgate refused to comment. “We need a point [to qualify] and it would be wrong for my attention to be anywhere else,” he said. “I’m under contract, I’m very well backed and supported and my focus is just on getting qualification.” A point against San Marino tomorrow will seal the spot for them as they remain on top of the Group I table.
Meanwhile, England’s captain Harry Kane said that he wants Southgate to stay in the team but refuses to comment on the deal. “That is obviously between the manager and the FA and, as players, we would never put pressure on a manager to make a decision before then,” Kane said. Kane’s hat-trick secured England a top-two finish or at least a spot in the play-offs of the 2022 World Cup.
Earlier, England’s dream of first European Championship title ended as Italy beat them via penalties. The regular time ended in 1-1 after extra time at Wembley Stadium then went into a penalty shootout, with England missed three penalties to make it 3-2. It was the first shootout in a Euro final since 1976. Follow us for Euro football news and Euro Champions League updates.
