One hundred days from now, the pandemic-postponed UEFA Euro 2020 will commence. With the rollout of COVID-19 jabs in Europe, host nations are now confident of holding the games in the wake of the pandemic, with nations like UK expressed their intention to stage the entire tournament. However, the governing body reiterates intention to hold the Euro 2020 football matches across 12 nations in Europe.
“Since the tournament was announced, as to be staged across 12 countries, it has remained UEFA’s intention to stage it in 12 countries,“ UEFA spokesperson said in a statement following the proposal of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to hold the games entirely in England. A final decision on the format of Euro 2020 hosting will be made at the UEFA Congress in Switzerland on April 20.
Initially, Munich, Rome, St Petersburg and Baku will host quarter-finals as well as group-stage clashes, while Copenhagen, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bilbao, Glasgow and Budapest are the other venues, staging group-stage and last-16 encounters. The most glorious 24-team tournament will now take place from June 11 to July 11 in 2021.
Earlier, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that UK offered hosting the entire euro league final in Britain this summer. This pronouncement echoed earlier reports about the proposal that the UK made after culture secretary Oliver Dowden has reportedly “signalled” to UEFA that crowds are expected back in UK stadiums before the rest of Europe, due to substantial progress on coronavirus jabs.
Prior to Johnson’s proposal, the Israel Football Association(IFA) confirmed they are willing to let UEFA use three of their stadiums for staging matches at this summer’s delayed Euro 2020 and the latter stages of the Champions League and Europa League. However, Israel has only two stadiums that would meet some of UEFA’s capacity requirements to host major matches.
In response to Israel’s offer, UEFA reaffirm its commitment to hold the original 12-nation tournament across the European region. “UEFA is committed to holding Euro 2020 across 12 European cities, according to the schedule agreed last summer. There are no other plans being pursued,” UEFA said in a statement. It is learnt that no Israeli city was among the 12 originally selected to stage the games.
