UEFA chief reiterates empty stadiums for Euro 2020 is “off the table”

In less than five months before the tournament commence, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) chief Aleksander Ceferin has issued a fresh statement regarding the fate of Euro 2020 hosting. Ceferin also reitarare UEFA’s commitment to hold the games as planned, saying that discussions regarding empty stadiums is “off the table.

“We have set a deadline of April 20 for the final decision on the Euros,” Ceferin speaking about Euro 2020 football matches to a news outlet. “The ideal scenario is to play the tournament in the original 12 venues, but if that is not possible, then it will go ahead in either ten or 11 countries if one or more of the venues cannot meet the required conditions.”

“We have several scenarios, but the one guarantee we can make is that the option of playing any Euro 2020 match in an empty stadium is off the table,” the UEFA president added. “Every host must guarantee there will be fans at their games.” Earlier this year, UEFA gave host cities until April 7 to come up with their plans, including the return of fans in stadiums.

However, Ceferin has revealed in earlier reports that they have pushed back their final decision of whether spectators will be allowed in stadiums for the games until April 20. Ceferin also expresses optimism in holding the tournament and giving the governments time to “formulate an accurate picture of what will be possible come”.

Each host city has until April 20 to confirm the number of fans allowed in each stadium, before a final decision is made by the UEFA executive committee. Ceferin also hopes that vaccination programmes will be the key to sticking to the original plan. He also confirmed that the pandemic-postponed tournament will go ahead with limited fans in the stadiums.

Initially, Munich, Rome, St Petersburg and Baku will host quarter-finals as well as group-stage clashes, while Copenhagen, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bilbao, Glasgow and Budapest are the other venues, staging group-stage and last-16 encounters. The most glorious 24-team tournament will now take place from June 11 to July 11 in 2021.
