Reigning champions Portugal announced 26-man squad for Euro 2020

Head coach Fernando Santos has announced his 26-man squad for their first Euro 2020 title defense, with Juventus talisman Cristiano Ronaldo to lead them this summer. The 36-year-old Ronaldo, who will be featured in fifth straight European Championship, will be supported by the likes of rising soccer stars Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Diogo Jota and João Félix.

Ronaldo aims to unlock another milestone in his international career as he is six goals away from becoming the all-time scoring record for a men’s national team, with the current record of 109 goals held by former Iran striker Ali Daei, the only other male soccer player to surpass the 100-goal milestone. Lisbon forward Pedro Gonçalves, who was key this season in helping Sporting win its first Portuguese league title since 2002, will also debut in the squad. Veteran Porto centre-back Pepe, 38, is also in the squad despite not having played for his country since October last year. They will begin their Group F campaign against France at the Puskas Arena, in a repeat of the Euro 2016 final.

The defending European champions Portugal, who won the title in 2016 and followed it up with the inaugural UEFA Nations League crown,  secured their spot when they edged past Luxembourg 2-0 away from home in the final day of qualification last year. Bruno Fernandes scored winner in the 39th minute, followed by a late insurance goal from Cristiano Ronaldo in the 86th.

“We are candidates to win the title. I leave with the same conviction (as in 2016) that Portugal can win this championship,” said the 66-year-old head coach Santos in a press conference. Here is Portugal’s Euro 2020 26-men squad:
