In a shocking announcement earlier this week, the Polish Football Association confirmed that Jerzy Brzeczek is no longer the head coach of the national team, five months before the European Championship and two months before the start of World Cup qualifying. The Polish FA did not give a specific reason for its decision or a replacement for the position.
“The Polish Football Association informs that on January 18, 2021, the coach Jerzy Brzęczek ceased to act as the coach of the Polish national team. – I would like to thank coach Brzęczek for his work with our national team so far,” said the president of the Polish Football Association, Zbigniew Boniek, in a statement. Brzeczek had been in charge of Poland since July 2018.
The 49-year-old Brzeczek is a former international midfielder who was appointed after Poland finished last in its group at the 2018 World Cup. In a professional career which spanned nearly 20 years and brought 42 caps with the Poland national team, Brzęczek played for clubs in Poland, Austria and Israel. He extended his contract last November.
Boniek also recalled his time with Brzęczek in a separate interview. “I invited Jerzy Brzeczek to my house, we had a coffee and I told him the news,” Boniek told a news agency. “It’s a sad day for me, but I take the responsibility for this decision. I have thought about it and I must do what is good for the team.”However, the vice-president of the federation, Cezary Kuleszasaid that he found out about Brzęczek’s dismissal from the Internet.
Brzęczek’s Poland faced off against North Macedonia and won 2-0 courtesy of goals from substitutes PrzemyslawFrankowski and Arkadiusz Milik, both set up by Bayern star Robert Lewandowski to clinch their spot in the tournament. Poland finished finished on top of Group G with 25 points. They have never qualified for the Euro finals until 2008, it will be their fourth appearance in a row.
Poland is set to face Spain, Slovakia and Sweden at Euro 2020 in a group being played in Dublin and Bilbao, Spain, while theywere drawn into a six-team group that includes England and Hungary in World Cup qualifying. Meanwhile, the Poles failed to beat Italy and the Netherlands at home and away in Nations League games last year.
