Ireland’s Seamus Coleman to miss Euro 2020 playoff

Seamus Coleman went down during Everton’s matchup against Manchester United at the 28-minute mark as he looked to have a problem around his thigh muscle area; Djibril Sidibe was called to substitute the Everton captain.

Ireland manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that Coleman would miss their critical UEFA EURO 2020 playoff match against Slovakia due to his injured leg.

With Coleman out of the picture, Ireland is quick enough to prepare for the club in these types of situations, Matt Doherty in the meantime would be the one to play at the right-back position.

Doherty suits well enough with the showmanship of his performance lately playing for the Wolves these past few weeks, scoring two goals and two assists within the last four games he played. He also stands as one of Ireland’s most impressive performers back from November making an equalizer from their 1-1 draw against Denmark in November.

Next in line to play over Coleman’s position is Cyrus Christie from Fulham, with McCarthy mentioning that he was impressed by the right-back during their recent 2-0 victory over Preston.

“I went there to have a look at Sean Maguire and Alan Browne primarily but Cyrus was the happier of the three of them by the final whistle,” said McCarthy.

“He was a ninth-minute substitute for Fulham and he came on and played really well for the rest of the game in what was a very big win for Fulham.” He added.

Coleman will not be the only absentee for Ireland’s fixture, it was confirmed earlier this week that Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark is likely to miss the rest of the season and the Euros as well with his ankle ligament injury.

With the injury of Coleman doesn’t provide a pleasing sound, West Bromwich and Ireland U-21 defender Dara O’Shea that have been providing exemplary results for the Baggies first-team seeing to it as his opportunity to push them above into the Premier League.

O’Shea is currently playing as a right-back for Slaven Bilic’s side wherein originally a centre-back as his true placement, could send a high notice as back up option to Matt Doherty and Cyrus Christie.
