In-form Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes has revealed that he eyes a spot in England’s squad for the upcoming European Championships. Barnes, who has scored 12 goals and 3 assists in 31 games this term, made his England debut in a friendly match against Wales before their euro Nations League match last October and wants to ensure he is in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the delayed tournament.
“As an English player the European Championship has to be a motivation, to make sure you’re in that squad at the end of the season,” Barnes said “Everyone can see the strength in depth and quality England have, so it’s not an easy task for anyone.” Barnes is on a run of five goals and two assists in his last 10 Premier League appearances, including goals, including against Liverpool and Manchester United.
Barnes helped the Foxes top Group G of the Europa League and slated to host Slavia, who are top of the Czech First League as they look to defend their title, in the second leg next week. The English club is currently enjoying this season, sitting third in the Premier League table, seven points behind leaders Manchester City. The Foxes remain in the FA Cup, with a quarter-final tie with United in March.
“As long as I can keep my club form as good as it has been, and keep improving for the rest of the season, hopefully I’ll give myself the best possible chance of that,” Barnes added. ”Over the last 12 months or so I’ve been really happy stats-wise. Improving my numbers on goals and assists is something I identified before the start of the season.”
During the qualifiers, Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions celebrated their 1,000th game in style as they booked their place in Euro 2020, thrashing Montenegro 7-0 to top Group A. Captain Harry Kane moved to sixth in England’s list of leading scorers as a first-half hat-trick took his tally to 31, overhauling Frank Lampard, Alan Shearer, Nat Lofthouse and Tom Finney.
England are also scheduled to play two World Cup qualifiers in March 2021 before Euro 2020 kicks off in June. They were seeded in the top pot and were drawn against Poland, Hungary, Albania, Andorra and San Marino in the qualifiers in March and could continue for 12 months if England need the play-offs to reach Qatar in 2022. Southgate led England to the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
