The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has announced its bid to stage the 2032 UEFA European Championship and have informed the governing body about this plan. Italy won the Euro 2020 football matches last year. UEFA earlier said that countries interested in hosting either the 2028 or 2032 edition of the Euros must confirm their bid by March 23.
“In the last few days the Italian Football Federation presented to UEFA its expression of interest for hosting Euro 2032,” FIGC said in a statement. Italy had originally planned to bid for either Euro 2028 or the 2030 World Cup. However, they added that hosting the 2032 European Championship would provide a “wider time window” to modernize the country’s stadium infrastructure.”
“The decisive step for the 2028 Euros is in March, and we will present our candidacy before the UEFA Executive committee, which is also open for 2032,” FIGC president Gabriele Gravina told a news conference. “We will evaluate one of the two options. We’ll do it in a serious fashion, because there is a great desire for a renewal of infrastructures, for example in Florence, Cagliari, Bologna and Bari.”
Italy co-hosted some of the games, including the opening ceremony, in the previous edition of the tournament in stadiums that have not been updated since the 1990 World Cup. Italy won the European Championship for the first time since 1968 last year at Wembley Stadium after England missed three penalties to make it 3-2. It was the first shootout in a Euro final since 1976.
Italy has previously staged the men’s European Championship in 1968 and 1980. Earlier, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Ireland expressed their interest to bid for Euro 2028 hosting, while a joint United Kingdom and Ireland bid for the tournament has also been confirmed. The bidders will be announced in April while the hosts will be appointed in September, 2023.
