Former Tottenham player Christian Eriksen is reportedly set to make a Premier League return, with Brentford offering him a six-month contract with the option of another year. Eriksen is currently a free agent after Inter terminated his contract following Italy’s rulings. Earlier, Eriksen’s agent, Martin Schoots, said that a return to England for Eriksen “would absolutely feel like coming home”.
The 29-year-old hasn’t played in any game since suffering a cardiac arrest against Finland during the opening match of Euro 2020 football matches. He suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated before being stretchered off the field. The incident required him to wear an implanted defibrillator, a device connected to the heart that sends an electrical pulse to correct irregular rhythms.
Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte has earlier said the “door is always open” to Eriksen at Spurs after they worked together at Inter. Eriksen, who had a contract in San Siro until 2024, spent six and a half seasons with Tottenham before joining Inter in January 2020 and made 60 appearances in all competitions before the incident, scoring eight goals.
Reports also claim that Eriksen wants to play regularly in order to play for Denmark at the 2022 World Cup in December. Earlier, the Danish player revealed his plans of playing for the national team at this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Denmark went on to earn a spot at Qatar 2022 by topping its qualifying group. “My goal is to play in the World Cup in Qatar, that’s been my mindset all along,” Eriksen said.
He is currently spending some time training on his own at former club Odense. “Physically, I’m back in top shape. I want to prove I’ve moved on and that I can play on the national team again,” he added. “It’s up to the manager to assess my level but my heart is not an obstacle.” The playmaker has won 109 caps for his country, and has signed a contract which ran until the summer of 2024.
