Christian Eriksen scored first goal for Denmark

Christian Eriksen returned to the international soccer pitch in style as he scored a goal for Denmark during the second half of a friendly against the Netherlands. This is also his first goal since the Euro 2020 collapse where he suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated before being stretchered off the field. The 30-year-old was brought on as a halftime substitute and scored just two minutes after being substituted.

“I was happy the ball came to me and of course, it was a lovely finish,” Eriksen said after the match. “To start the comeback in international football like this was the perfect way. I felt very welcome (by the Netherlands fans). I’ve been here before (for Ajax) for many years so of course, they know me, but it was a very heartwarming reception for sure.” Follow us for more Euro Nations League updates!

The incident that happened in the Euros required him to wear an implanted defibrillator, a device connected to the heart that sends an electrical pulse to correct irregular rhythms. It also prompted his exit in his club Inter Milan as Italy prohibits players wearing an implanted heart device. Eriksen has spent some time training on his own at former club Odense earlier this year.

“I’m looking forward to playing at the Qatar World Cup, but there are a lot of games in between and I’m focused on them,” Eriksens added. The playmaker has won 109 caps for his country prior to this game, the fifth on the list of Denmark’s most capped players who had signed a contract which ran until the summer of 2024, scoring 37 goals. Denmark earned a spot at Qatar 2022 by topping its qualifying group.

Eriksen is currently playing for Premier League side Brentford on a six-month deal. He has played three times for the Bees, providing an assist in their 2-0 win over Burnley on March 12. The Danish is the first known professional footballer to play with an ICD in the English top flight. Previously, Eriksen spent six and a half seasons with Tottenham before joining Inter in January 2020 and made 60 appearances.
