Despite Portugal’s early exit in the tournament, Cristiano Ronaldo remains the favorite to win the Golden Boot award after netting twice against Hungary, twice against France and once against Germany in the first round of the Euro 2020 football matches. He is followed by Czech Republic’s Patrik Schick, who had a memorable tournament scoring five goals as well.
It is learnt that the five-goal tie between Ronaldo and Schick is the first time in the European championships since the 2000 edition, when Patrick Kluivert and Savo Milosevic both hit that figure. UEFA, however, have stated that in the event of a tie, assists would determine the winner. Ronaldo’s assist is the possible tie breaker between him and Schick.
Meanwhile, Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku, France’s Karim Benzema and Sweden’s Emil Forsberg are one back on four goals but they will not add more as their team have already been eliminated. The likes of England’s Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane, and Denmark’s Kasper Dolberg are all on three and they still have games to play, while there are nine players left on two goals.
Earlier in the tournament, aldo became the all-time top scorer at the European Championships after his brace in the final minutes to help holders Portugal beat Hungary 3-0 in their opening match. The Portugal talisman now has 14 goals in the competition, surpassing the record of France’s Michel Platini on nine that he previously shared with.
The Juventus forward made his Euro debut for his country in 2004 where Portugal hosted the tournament. He remained the talisman of the reigning champions 17 years later. At 36 years, 130 days, Ronaldo became the oldest player to score for Portugal at a major tournament, breaking the record set by Pepe at World Cup 2018 (35 years, 124 days).
